Ambergris is an olfactory note with animal, leathery and extremely persistent scents. Its woody, dry and powdery characteristics, with fine sweet and somewaht earthy facets are used as a fixative, mainly in combination to floral notes.

History

Ambergris is a substance produced physiologically by cachalots, from a wounds caused in their bowel by the bones of the cuttlefish on which they feed. Expelled into the sea, this secretion floats on the waters collecting its scents, and sometimes runs aground on the beaches. In modern perfumery, ambergris is mainly replaced by products of synthetic origin.

Considered as precious as gold, ambergris was used in Middle East, India and China for its alleged aphrodisiac and medicinal properties. Its current name derives from the French ambergris, which was used to distinguish it in trade from fossil amber.
